Fire engulfs the main warehouse at Zimbabwe’s Beitbridge border post on Thursday night. There was chaos at the Beitbridge border post in Zimbabwe on Thursday night when the main warehouse went up in smoke, destroying confiscated goods and goods for which duty was still to be paid.
The source of the fire was unknown but sources said the border came to a standstill amid a lot of commotion as onlookers from the nearby township descended to the scene.
The incident occured as traffic was starting to pick up at the border, which is among the busiest in Africa.
Facilities on the Zimbabwe side of the Beitbridge border post have long been described as grossly inadequate, with holiday travellers frequently being stuck there for hours, often in the blazing sun.
Plans to revamp the entire border complex have so far been at drawing stage.
