Obuasi (Ash), April 26, GNA – AngloGold Ashanti Ghana, together with its strategic Malaria Control partners, “AGAMal”, has held a Malaria sensitization, screening and treatment exercise for more than 2,000 people in Obuasi and the Akrokeri Traditional area, to commemorate the 2019 World Malaria Day.
Preceded by a street float in the Obuasi township, the event was aimed at educating the people in the mining area, to embrace “the get tested, treat and track Malaria” approach, to reduce the disease scourge.
Mr. Brett Thompson, the Head of Operations at the AngloGold Ashanti Ghana, said the essence of the celebration was not to only to sensitise the populace, but also to improve corporate and government efforts at stemming the scourge of Malaria.
He said the worldwide theme ‘‘Zero Malaria Starts with Me’’ underscores the call to action for concrete steps to be taken individually and collectively towards ending Malaria to safeguard our physical, economic and social existence.
“It is to also promote the conscious efforts of all, however little, to move the country closer to a malaria free nation”. He added.
Mr. Thompson said reducing and eliminating Malaria creates healthier, more equitable and prosperous societies, which in turn promotes a broadly inclusive and multi-sectoral response.
Malaria though preventable, he said, remained a major Public Health problem in Africa and Ghana in particular and this constitutes a major barrier to social and economic development.
Alluding to statistics, the Head of Operation said over 90 per cent of the population in Ghana is at risk, while children and pregnant women are seen to be more vulnerable to this disease.
Mr. Thompson therefore called for cool heads to brainstorm and help find a lasting solution to curb the pandemic.
Mr. Elijah Adanse Bonah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Obuasi reiterated government’s readiness, commitment and support to help curb malaria in the Obuasi Municipality and the country at large.
