Our Methodology

1. What are your indices based on?

Our indices are constructed using a transparent methodology that prioritizes liquidity, market capitalization, and sector diversity across African markets.

2. How often are the indices updated?

We update our indices regularly to reflect market movements and ensure accuracy.

3. What is the fundamental principle behind the construction of MoneyInAfrica™ equity indices?

The primary method for constructing MoneyInAfrica™ equity indices is float-adjusted market capitalisation weighting. This approach assigns a weight to each constituent company based on its market value that is available for trading by the public (free float). Companies with larger investable market capitalisations will have a greater influence on the index's performance.

4. How are companies selected for inclusion in these indices?

The selection process is based on our investability screens on the African equity universe. These screens consider factors such as a minimum full and free float-adjusted market capitalisation, liquidity requirements (based on Average Traded Value Ratio - ATVR), and adherence to specific country or sector classifications (for us Bloomberg Industry Classification).

5. How are dividends and other corporate actions treated in index calculations?

Our Total Return or Net Return Indices account for dividends. These indices calculate based on reinvesting the value of cash dividends, and for Net Return after applicable withholding taxes back into the index. Corporate actions like stock splits, rights issues, and spin-offs are incorporated using Adjustment factors to ensure continuity and represantiveness of the index.

6. How are indices calculated and maintained on an ongoing basis?

Index calculation typically involves a divisor methodology, where the total market capitalisation of the index constituents is divided by a divisor to arrive at the index level. This divisor is adjusted to account for corporate actions and index changes to prevent non-market fluctuations. Our team meets with market experts to regularly to review index composition, consider potential changes, address significant market events, and review current methodologies to ensure they remain effective.

The index constituents can be provided on a subscription basis - contact us regarding this.

The index values will be published on our website, and they can be provided by email, API or a plugin - contact us for more detail.
