Safaricom Reclaims Top Spot in the Fixed Broadband Market

As of the end of June, Safaricom had reclaimed the top spot in the broadband market after gaining 25 percent fixed broadband subscribers. Back in Q1, Zuku surpassed Safaricom to top the country’s fixed data subscription market . But the reign didn’t last. As of the end of June, Safaricom had reclaimed the top spot after gaining 25 percent fixed broadband subscribers.

This is according to the latest Sector Statistics report from the Communication Authority of Kenya(CA).

Internet subscriptions continue to grow in the country as more services are moved online. Safaricom ended the quarter under review with 207,398 subscribers, and an overall market share of 33.5 percent. In comparison to the Jan-March quarter, Safaricom posted strong performance, adding a total of 41,588 subscribers in Q2.

Wananchi Group (Kenya) Ltd, the owner of Zuku, now at number two, has 201,605 subscribers – 26,172 more from Q1. Wanachi Group currently has 1 percent less in market share compared to market leader, Safaricom. At number three is JTL with 118,493 subscribers, and 19.1 percent share.

The general market posted a strong performance in the period, ending with 619,579 fixed broadband subscribers in the country compared to the 500,888 posted at the end of Q1. Q2 was yet impressive quarter for the service providers, as the market reached a new high.

CA says the increased demand was due to increased demand for access to information online and the transfer of more services online.
