Kenya Airways plane leaves A second flight carrying Kenyans evacuated from the United Kingdom following the coronavirus pandemic is en route to Nairobi.
According to Kenya’s High Commissioner to the UK Manoah Esipisu, the Kenya Airways Chartered plane left Heathrow Airport at around 3pm on Friday.
The Kenya High Commission in London had announced on Tuesday that the flight was available on a first-come-first-served basis.
Those wishing to return were asked to pay £771 (Ksh.101,000) per ticket in the economy class or £2,140 (Ksh.279,000) in business class, nearly double the amount paid by the first group that was evacuated from the UK on May 4.
Explaining the huge difference in price, Kenya Airways said the first flight was ferrying cargo to and from the United Kingdom.
“There is a difference in price and this is because the flight on May 4 was ferrying cargo to and from the United Kingdom. It was, therefore, possible to balance out the operating costs between cargo and passenger services,” Kenya Airways told a local daily on Thursday.
Upon arrival into the country, the evacuated Kenyans are set to quarantined for 14-28 days at their own cost.
Other Kenyans who were stranded in India and China were evacuated a week ago at their cost.
Those travelling from India paid Ksh.46,000 ($430) while those from China parted with Ksh.80,242 ($750) per ticket.
