Unmasked: Faces Behind Private Power Companies Selling Electricity to KPLC

Kenya Power spends over 66% of its revenue on purchasing power

IPPs rake in 47% of power purchase costs despite supplying 28% of units to the electricity distributor

Source: UGC According to the Presidential Taskforce on Review of Power Purchase Agreements, 72% is supplied by state-owned Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC ( KenGen).

However, whereas KenGen sold power to Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) at an average of KSh 5.48 per unit, the amount was double for IPPs on average in 2020.

1. Lake Turkana Wind Power

According to data on its website , the Lake Turkana Wind Power is a consortium comprising KP&P Africa B.V and Anergi Turkana Investments Limited as co-developers, Investment Fund for developing countries, Vestas Eastern Africa Limited, Finnish Fund for Industrial Cooperation Ltd, KLP Norfund Investments AS and Sandpiper.

Kasper Paardekooper and René Hampsink are the directors of KP&P Africa which has 92 shareholders.

In 2020, LTWP sold 1.238 billion units to KPLC at KSh 12.2 billion (KSh 9.89 per unit). 2. OrPower 4 Inc Bloomberg reported that OrPower 4 Inc develops and operates renewable energy projects.The company is incorporated in the Cayman Islands, a British overseas territory.The firm is owned by Ormat Holding Corp (100%) whose founder is Yehudit (Dita) Bronicki, an Israeli national.Besides Kenya, it operates geothermal power plants Guadalupe, Guatemala, Honduras and the United States.In 2020, the Naivasha-based company sold 1.076 billion units to KPLC at KSh 12.4 billion. 3. Rabai Power Ltd – 252 million units at KSh 4.8 billion (KSh 19.12 per unit).
