Stanbic Bank Uganda has named Anne Juuko as the bank’s next chief executive, replacing Patrick Mweheire, who has been appointed regional chief executive, East Africa, Standard Bank Group. The changes are effective on 1 March, according to a statement.
Ms Juuko, who becomes the first female leader of Uganda’s largest bank, joined Stanbic Bank Uganda in 2012 as the head of global markets. She was appointed head of corporate and investment bank at Standard Bank Namibia in February 2018, her most recent position before the new appointment.
Before joining Stanbic Bank, Ms Juuko worked at Citibank Uganda Limited as vice president and the head of the fixed income, currencies, and commodities division. She later moved to Citibank Kenya as vice president in charge of customer sales and derivates marketing. She started her banking career in 2001.
Ms Juuko is also the second Ugandan appointed to head the bank since 2002 when South Africa’s Standard Bank became majority shareholder — the first was Mr Mweheire , who was appointed chief executive in January 2015.
A statement released by Stanbic Bank Uganda and signed by Japheth Katto, the board chair, said Mr Mweheire “sustained the bank’s leadership position in the market.”
“Patrick has been instrumental in the transformation of the organisation and remains influential in contributing to the growth of the financial sector in Uganda and across the East African Region,” the statement added.
Stanbic said that Mr Mweheire, in his new position, will oversee Standard Bank Group’s “growth strategy in East Africa which comprises of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan and Ethiopia.”
