Safaricom most valuable brand in Kenya, new survey shows

– MTN was listed Africa’s most valuable brand and valued at KSh 358.8 billion

– South African brands dominated the ranking, claiming 87 spots and accounting for 76% of total brand value

– Safaricom was ranked Africa’s third most profitable telco and Kenya’s most valuable brand

– Kenya’s Senator Lager beer was Africa’s fastest-growing brand registering an impressive growth rate of 88%

A recently published report has listed Safaricom as Africa’s third most profitable telecommunications firm and Kenya’s most valuable brand.

The Brand Finance study listed 150 firms in Africa where Safaricom grabbed position 12. The study estimated Safaricom’s value at KSh 105 billion topping other giants like Equity and KCB banks.

Equity and KCB banks grabbed positions 69 and 70 respectively.

South Africa dominated the list of top 10 most valuable brands in Africa with MTN and Vodacom grabbing the first and second spots. "Telecoms brands MTN and Vodacom claimed the first and second spot in the overall ranking. The third most valuable telecoms brand – and 12th most valuable in the ranking – is Kenya’s Safaricom with a brand value of US$970 million (KSh 105 billion)," the study read. Beer brand Senator Lager featured on the list at position 80 and was the fastest growing brand at a remarkable growth rate of 88%, with a market value of ( USD$132M) KSh 14.35 billion. "Senator Lager’s band value has grown an impressive 88% to US$132 million, making the beer brand the fastest growing brand in this year’s ranking by some way," the report read. Senator Lager was established by alcohol giant Diageo in 2012 and since its inception, it has become popular amongst workers, some of whom have switched to the brand from homemade alternatives due to its very low prices. It is brewed by East African Breweries.
Other Kenyan brands that featured on the ranking are Kenya Airways (123) which has over the years been struggling with losses . Its Addis Ababa based competitor Ethiopian Airlines which boasts of healthy financial books was position 33.Textile firm Sheet Street was the last Kenyan company on the list at position 144.The report noted that though most African brands had shown remarkable resilience, the COVID-19 pandemic had dealt them […]
