The Rebecca Foundation, as part of efforts to mitigate the socio-economic discomfort associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, has donated assorted items to the SOS Children’s Village, Ghana.

The donations include 15 boxes of cocoa drink, 10 bags of maize, 10 bags of beans, 10 bags of gari, 20 bags of rice, 15 cartons of vegetable oil, 10 bags of sugar, five boxes of toilet roll, 15 boxes of chocolate spread, 12 boxes of washing powder and 25 boxes of cupcakes.

The SOS Village Ghana is made up of the SOS villages in Tema, in the Greater Accra Region; Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region; Asiakwa, in the Eastern Region and Tamale, in the Northern Region.

Making the donations on behalf of the Executive Director of the foundation and First Lady of Ghana, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the Director of Operations of the foundation, Mrs Akosua Newman, said as Patron of the SOS Village, Mrs Akufo-Addo was not lost to possible challenges that could confront the institution in these times of the COVID-19 pandemic and its attendant lockdown and quarantines, thus her decision to donate to the village.

Mrs Newman said the important role played by the SOS Village in taking care of orphans in society made it imperative that the COVID-19 pandemic did not penetrate their doors, as an outbreak on any of their campuses would be disastrous to their innocent ‘children’.

She said the foundation through its initiative, The Rebecca Foundation ‘Relief Boxes Challenge’, had received contributions and distributed same to various identifiable groups and institutions, stating that the First Lady, through her foundation, was determined to partner corporate Ghana to complement the government’s effort at reducing the discomfort associated with the “necessary partial lockdown to ensure a halt in the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic”.

Mrs Akosua Newman urged corporate institutions and individuals to continue partnering the Rebecca Foundation to ensure that its objective of initiating the ‘Relief Boxes Challenge’ to reach out to identified persons, including Kayayei, the aged, destitutes and single mothers who lived in poor communities, and provide some respite from the social and economic hardship resulting from COVID-19, was achieved.
