Tullow Oil has awarded a $16m contract to Petrofac for the Thames decommissioning project in the southern North Sea.
Petrofac will serve as the well operator for the latest phase of the decommissioning project, handling the execution of plug and abandonment operations on three of Tullow Oil’s subsea wells.
Pursuant to the terms of the contract, Petrofac will be responsible for detailed planning, direct procurement and management of all sub-contracted services, as well as provision of a jack-up rig.
Petrofac Engineering and Production Services Well Engineering managing director Alex Macdonald said: “We are delighted to further strengthen our relationship with Tullow Oil as it takes the next step in its Thames decommissioning project.

“At the end of the asset lifecycle, the focus on cost and schedule remains as important as ever. This award is testament to the approach we take to optimise operations through new decommissioning techniques and maximise collaboration across the supply chain in order to drive efficiency.”
The latest contract comes after Petrofac completed plug and abandonment programmes for Tullow in 2016 and 2018 . The work involved decommissioning seven subsea and platform wells, and Petrofac stated that the programmes delivered project savings of more than $6.5m.
In October 2015, Tullow received approval for the final decommissioning programmes for the Horne & Wren platform, Wissey and Orwell subsea installations and the connecting pipelines and umbilicals within the Thames Area Complex. The company completed the first phase of the Thames Area decommissioning project in 2015 and the second phase of the Horne & Wren decommissioning project in March 2017.
