A litigator has left Dentons’ Kenyan outfit to join a local firm which is facing greater demand from corporate clients.
Kenyan law firm Munyao, Muthama & Kashindi Advocates (MMK) has added to its litigation practice with the hire of a partner with a broad disputes practice.
James Tugee joined the firm this week from Dentons Hamilton Harrison & Matthews , the local operation of international law firm Dentons , earning a promotion from senior associate in the process.
Tugee’s litigation practice that includes commercial, intellectual property, judicial review and administrative, employment and technology, media and telecommunications disputes. His experience includes appearing before the Kenyan Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, and he has also worked in alternative dispute resolution.
The move reunites him with colleague and fellow litigator Margaret Miringu who made the move from Dentons to the Kenyan firm in January last year.
MMK managing partner and head of dispute resolution Paul Munyao described the hire as “a very strategic move”, explaining: “Over the last few years, our firm has been entrusted with complex and sensitive mandates to act for some of Kenya’s leading corporations,” and that Tugee “brings on board the skillset we need and strengthens our capabilities to further enhance the support we can provide our clients”.
MMK’s clients include Safaricom , Unilever , Kenya Ports Authority, KCB Bank Kenya and National Bank of Kenya , and Tugee described the firm as “an exciting opportunity for me to grow my expertise”.
Dentons, the world’s largest law firm by headcount, entered the Kenyan market in October 2018 by combining with Hamilton Harrison & Mathews, part of its wider programme of African expansion that included new operations in Mauritius , Uganda and several other countries.
