KenGen opens bids for Olkaria geothermal power plants upgrade

The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has applied for financing from the KfW Bankengruppe (KfW) and intends to undertake upgrading of Olkaria IV and Olkaria IAU 140MW geothermal power plants in order to increase the power output and improve steam efficiency.

Deadline for receipt of the prequalification document is Thursday, 19 November 2020 at 12:00 hours, EAT.

The project to be carried out under a civil, electrical and mechanical EPC contract entails:

• Upgrading the existing Olkaria IV units 1 & 2 steam turbines steam path to be able to admit steam at a higher inlet pressure in order to increase the power output from the current 75MW gross to 85MW gross turbine/generator,

• Upgrading the existing Olkaria I additional units 4 & 5 steam turbines steam path to be able to admit steam at a higher inlet pressure in order to increase the power output from the current 75MW gross to 85MW gross turbine/generator,

• Supply and installation of steam turbine rotors complete with blades and nozzles for both Olkaria IV units 1 & 2,

• Supply and installation of steam turbine rotors complete with blades and nozzles for both Olkaria 1 additional units 4 & 5,

• Supply and install all associated electrical systems and controls for both Olkaria IV and Olkaria IAU upgraded turbines,

• All the associated civil and structural works to be undertaken for the upgrading and installation.

The services of the consultant of this tender include the following activities:

Preparation of the employers requirements for the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) procurement and the OEM service contract for the scope of works described below: > Risk analysis and mitigation, Preparation of documents for the procurement of the OEM to: a) Design, supply and deliver two new turbines (one for Olkaria IAU and another for Olkaria IV) each capable of admitting steam at the respective steamfield operating pressureb) Upgrade the steam path for the existing turbines in Olkaria IV and Olkaria IAU so as to be able to admit steam at higher inlet pressure (equivalent to the steamfield operating pressure) in order to increase power output3. Evaluation of technical and financial proposal provided by the OEM for the project activities. Carry out supervision of construction works and contract management for the project activities4.
