Shoprite to close shop in Uganda

Shoprite has announced that it will stop operations in Uganda and Madagascar.

They join Nakumat and Uchumi supermarkets that exited Uganda in the recent past.

The South African-based supermarket had branches at Village mall in Bugolobi, Lugogo and Acacia mall in Kololo and Victoria mall in Entebbe.

According to a report by Reuters, the South African based supermarket has been reviewing its long-term options across Africa over the past year as currency devaluations, lower commodity prices and high inflation have hit household incomes and weighed on earnings.

“In line with the group’s non-RSA review process, our operations in Madagascar and Uganda have been classified as discontinued,” Shoprite announced on August 23, 2021.

Uganda currently has local supermarkets like Capital shoppers, Quality supermarket and Mega Standard supermarket that can fill the void.
