Speaking during an interview with Standard Digital , the veteran TV actor noted that he lost the deal years after retrenchment from Nation Media Group.
"The most painful memory I can recall was when I was meant to sign a contract of Ksh30 million with a betting company but then the laws in the country were changed and the company had to pull out," Gathu narrated. The veteran presenter is a household name for hosting various shows on TV and Radio spanning over three decades.
Gathu, who has worked for Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), Kiss 100, Capital FM, Nation FM, Hot 96, KTN, Citizen TV, and K24, also claimed that his close friends deserted him after he lost his job at NMG.
He recalled walking to work at Nation FM at around 4:30 am and by 8:30 am he was jobless.
"At 4:30 in the morning I kissed my kids goodbye and told my wife I was going to work, at 8:30 am that morning I didn’t have a job," Jimmy stated.
He added, "So once whatever you were giving them disappears you don’t have value. I had never been unemployed.
"I had never even looked for work – people chased after me. But when my contract with Nation Media Group ended , my phone suddenly stopped ringing," he recounted.
Gathu joined Nation FM in 2015 and was retrenched a year later in 2016.
The father of three resolved to venture into acting. He used the platform to tell stories that resonated with his life since he avoided venting publicly.
However, his big break in the media came almost 6 years later when Standard Group through Spice FM offered him a job.
