KenGen appoints contractor for geothermal power plant project

Featured image: Stock Marubeni Corporation has been awarded a full turn-key engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company Limited (KenGen) for the construction of a 70MW class geothermal power plant in the Olkaria area.

This will be Marubeni’s first geothermal power plant project in Africa.

The goal of this geothermal power project, which is expected to be completed in 2021, is the construction of unit 6 within Olkaria1 Geothermal Power Station. Read more: Geothermal Development Company to commence drilling wells

The main components required for this project, including steam turbines and generators, will be provided by the Japanese firm, Fuji Electric. Financing the project

This geothermal power plant will be financed by an ODA loan from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), with additional loans from the European Investment Bank.

Peak demand in Kenya has been increasing by an average of approximately 5% annually.

In other news involving KenGen, the power company announced that it has changed its name from Kenya Electricity Generating Company Limited to Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC with effect from 22 July. Kenya Electricity Generating Company Limited has changed its name to Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC with effect from 22nd July 2018.
