Kenyan bourse seeks Chinese investors’ participation in local capital market

NAIROBI, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) — The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) said Wednesday it wants to attract Chinese investors to help improve the level of activity at the East African nation’s capital markets.

Geoffrey Odundo, CEO, NSE told Xinhua in Nairobi that the entry of investors from the Asian nation will deepen the local capital market by increasing the number of listed companies and turnover achieved.

"We are currently in discussions with the Shenzhen Stock Exchange to link it with the NSE so as to improve the level of activity at our capital markets," Odundo said during the expansion of NSE incubation program.

Odundo observed that investors in the Chinese stock markets have already expressed interest in participating in the NSE because of its potential to bring high returns.

"Chinese investors are keen on investing in financial technology (fintech) and other firms which are likely to benefit from the current digitization trend," he added.

According to the NSE, five listed companies account for the bulk of capital market wealth in the country resulting in a concentration risk for investors.

"We are looking at all avenues that will increase the number of listed companies and products available to investors," Odundo said.

He added that by partnering with foreign stock markets, the bourse will be able to provide capital market players with more investment options. Enditem
