NGX: Banking stocks’ loss reverse gains as ASI sheds 0.1%

Equities trading at the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) opens the week in the red zone as selloffs in banking stocks weigh down the benchmark index to reverse previous trading gains.

Accordingly, on Monday, the All-Share Index (ASI) ended the trading session 0.1 per cent lower at 38,906.42 basis points, owing to depreciation recorded in the value of GTCO and Zenith Bank stock.

Consequently, the Month-to-Date (MtD) and Year-to-Date (YtD) losses ASI increased to -0.8 per cent and -3.4 per cent, respectively. As measured by market breadth, market sentiment was flat, as an equal number of 18 tickers recorded gains and declines.

On the performance chart, CHI PLC Chams topped the gainers’ list as their respective shares appreciated by 9.6 per cent and 9.5 per cent, while SCOA and Veritas Kapital recorded the most significant losses of the day, having declined by 9.7 per cent and 8.7 per cent respectively.

Analysing by sectors, the Insurance, Banking, and Consumer Goods indices declined by 0.7 per cent, 0.3 per cent and 0.2 per cent, respectively, while the Oil & Gas recorded the sole gain of the day. The Industrial Goods index closed flat.

However, the local bourse enjoyed robust activities on Monday as the total volume of trades increased by 23.1 per cent to 190.96 million units, valued at N2.35 billion, and exchanged in 3,462 deals. EKOCORP was the most traded stock by volume at 40.00 million units, while MTN Nigeria was the most traded stock by value at N752.67 million, respectively.
