Passenger flights at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) might resume soon if a leaked memo from Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is something to go by.
The government of Kenya suspended all passenger flights in and out of Kenya after an outcry from Kenyans to stop the spread of Covid-19 that was associated with passengers who continued streaming in.
For the past 2 months, only cargo flights have been operating, forcing the ailing Kenya Airways to convert some of its passenger planes into cargo planes to tap into the demand.
Currently, there is a cessation of movement both by air and road in and out of Nairobi and if flights are set to resume, it means the government is also about to drop the cessation of movement order.
A leaked memo in our possession shows Kenya Airports Authority management calling on senior officials to attend an online meeting to plan and discuss a possible resumption of passenger flights.
“In preparation for the imminent resumption of passenger operations at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you are hereby invited to a virtual meeting to be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2020.”
The move to resume passenger flights is likely to put Kenya at a more dangerous position a time when the spread of Covid-19 is picking up in most African countries.
