Ghana Oil Company Limited (GOIL) has handed over 1,000 hospital beds to the Ministry of Health for distribution to hospitals across the country.
The beds which cost GH¢1,458,000 was donated to ease sleeping conditions at various public hospitals and to help reduce incidents of patients sleeping on the floors in some public hospitals.
At a ceremony in Accra to present the beds, the acting MD and Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GOIL, Mr Kwame Osei-Prempeh, recalled that in 2017 GOIL made a similar donation to the Ministry of Health.
Corporate Social Responsibility
Mr Osei-Prempeh explained that GOIL had been deeply involved in several corporate social responsibility programmes over the past few years mostly in the water, sanitation and health sectors as well as in providing educational infrastructure for schools in the country.
“Support to health institutions has in particular been a crucial part of GOIL’s corporate social responsibility programmes. GOIL was a major contributor to the building of the Baby and Child centre at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital which was spearheaded by the First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo Addo, and was inaugurated last year,” he said.
He said GOIL intended to make improvements in patient healthcare in general, and that the company would continue to care for the communities in which it operated, noting that the donation was a demonstration that beyond business and profits, GOIL was socially responsible.
A Deputy Minister of Health, Ms Tina Mensah, who is also the MP for Weija-Gbawe, expressed her gratitude to GOIL for the gesture.
She said the beds had come at a good time to help reduce the no bed syndrome in our hospitals.
All the 1,000 beds donated were fitted with durable mattresses and comprised beds for children, delivery beds and normal hospital beds.
