Sipho Pityana. Former Business Unity SA president Sipho Pityana was accused by a senior manager at AngloGold Ashanti of sexual harassment, according to his affidavit, filed as part of his lawsuit against SA’s bank authority.
Pityana dropped a bombshell on Monday, claiming that Absa nominated him to become chairperson, but that the SA Reserve Bank’s Prudential Authority (PA), which oversees the banks, vetoed him. This was due to "undue influence" by former Absa CEO Maria Ramos, who informed the board of the harassment allegations, Pityana contends.
In an affidavit filed on 21 October, Pityana said the Absa board had recommended that he be appointed as chair. This nomination was subject to approval by the PA. But in "informal" conversations, Ramos then brought it to the attention of the PA that Pityana faced sexual harassment allegations at AngloGold Ashanti (AGA).
